Temperature Converter
Is 30 degrees hot or cold? It depends entirely on whether you're in Miami (86°F - nice beach weather) or Montreal (86°F - heatwave) or if you're talking Celsius vs Fahrenheit. Our converter stops the guessing game so you know exactly how to dress.
What this calculator does
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: For interpreting European weather.
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: For scientific and global contexts.
- Kelvin Conversions: For chemistry students and physics nerds.
- Real-time slider/input updates.
The Formula
Temperature math is tricky because the scales start at different places (0°C 0°F).
Unlike math class, here's what that means
- Celsius: 0 is freezing, 100 is boiling. (Water-based).
- Fahrenheit: 32 is freezing, 212 is boiling. (Human-based? It's complicated).
- Kelvin: 0 is "absolute zero" where atoms stop moving. (Science-based). Converting them shifts the "zero" point and stretches the scale.
Example Calculation
You see a recipe calling for 200°C but your oven is in Fahrenheit.
- Multiply by 1.8:
- Add 32:
- Result: Set your oven to 392°F (or rough it to 390°F/400°F).
Did You Know? 💡
- The Magic Number: -40 is the only temperature where Celsius and Fahrenheit are exactly the same. . It's just "really cold."
- Why 98.6?: Normal body temperature is taught as 98.6°F because it's an exact conversion of 37°C. However, modern research shows the actual human average is closer to 97.5°F. You technically "run cool."
- Absolute Zero: 0 Kelvin is the coldest possible temperature in the universe. At this point, even atoms stop shivering.
Expert Insight
Oven Cheat Sheet:
- 350°F 180°C (The standard "bake" temp)
- 400°F 200°C (Roasting veggies)
- Fan-Forced Ovens: If you have a convection (fan) oven, generally lower the temperature by 20°C (or 25-50°F) from what a standard recipe says, or stuff will burn.
Why this matters
Confusing F and C is dangerous. If a doctor says a child has a fever of "100" and you think "100 Celsius" (which is boiling water), that's panic. If a weather report says "30 degrees" and you dress for winter (30°F) but it's summer (30°C), you're gonna sweat.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the "quick" math for C to F? Double it and add 30.
- Example: 20°C.
- Double: 40. Add 30: 70.
- Actual: 68°F. (Close enough for deciding on a jacket!)
Does Kelvin use degrees? No. You don't say "Degrees Kelvin." It's just "Kelvin." (e.g., "The lab is 293 Kelvin").
Why does the US use Fahrenheit? Fahrenheit offers more precision for weather. The difference between 70°F and 71°F is subtle, whereas 21°C and 22°C is a larger jump. It's great for humans, bad for water.
What is "Room Temperature"? Generally accepted as 20-22°C or 68-72°F.
