Cups, pints, quarts, liters... liquid math is surprisingly wet and messy. Whether you're bartending, baking, or just trying to drink 2 liters of water a day, our volume converter keeps your measurements precise and your floor dry.

What this calculator does

  • Kitchen Helper: Cups \leftrightarrow Milliliters, Tablespoons \leftrightarrow Fluid Ounces.
  • Metric / US: Liters to Gallons and back.
  • Scientific: Cubic meters for the serious stuff.

The Formula

Volume is 3D space. Volume=Input×Factor\text{Volume} = \text{Input} \times \text{Factor}

  • Key Factor: 1 Liter=1,000 ml33.8 fl oz1 \text{ Liter} = 1,000 \text{ ml} \approx 33.8 \text{ fl oz}.

Unlike math class, here's what that means

Imagine a box that is 10cm x 10cm x 10cm. That's exactly 1 Liter. If you fill it with water, it weighs exactly 1 Kilogram. The metric system is beautiful like that. The US system (1 Gallon = 128 fl oz) is... less beautiful.

Example Calculation

A recipe calls for 500 ml of milk, but you only have a measuring cup (in cups).

  1. Ratio: 1 Cup \approx 237 ml.
  2. Math: 500÷237=2.11500 \div 237 = 2.11.
  3. Result: You need a little more than 2 cups.

Did You Know? 💡

  • A "Cup" isn't a Cup: Your coffee mug is not a measurement. A standard US Cup is 237ml. A Metric Cup (used in Australia, Canada) is 250ml. If you use the wrong one in baking, your cake might flop!
  • The "Pint" Trap: "A pint's a pound the world around" is a lie.
    • US Pint: 16 fl oz (473 ml).
    • UK Imperial Pint: 20 fl oz (568 ml).
    • This is why beer is bigger in London!
  • Oil Barrels: Crude oil is measured in "barrels" (bbl). One barrel is exactly 42 US gallons.

Expert Insight

The Meniscus: When measuring liquids in a glass cylinder, the surface curves (usually dips in the middle). To be accurate, always measure from the bottom of the curve (the meniscus), not the edges.

  • Baking Tip: Wet and Dry measuring cups are different! A liquid cup has a spout and space at the top. A dry cup is flat so you can level it off. Using a liquid cup for flour usually results in too much flour.

Why this matters

Chemistry and Baking are the same thing: chemistry you can eat. Both require exact ratios. Too much liquid makes specific chemical reactions fail (leaving you with a goopy brownie or an exploded lab).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tablespoons in a cup? 16 Tablespoons = 1 Cup.

Is a Fluid Ounce the same as an Ounce? No!

  • Fluid Ounce: Volume (Space).
  • Ounce: Weight (Mass).
  • Exception: 1 fl oz of water weighs roughly 1 oz. But 1 fl oz of honey weighs 1.5 oz.

How many Liters in a Gallon? 3.785 Liters in a US Gallon.

What is a "cc"? Cubic Centimeter. It is exactly the same as a Milliliter (ml). Doctors use "cc" (e.g., "Give him 10cc of epi!") because it sounds cool, but it's just 10ml.

Disclaimer: Volume varies slightly with temperature (liquids expand when hot!). For standard cooking, you can ignore this.
