Pressure Converter

Is your tire flat, or is 2.2 Bar actually okay? Pressure units are a mess of Pascals, PSI, and Atmospheres. Our converter helps you pump up your tires, check your boiler, or just understand the weather report without exploding.

What this calculator does

  • Tires & Cars: PSI \leftrightarrow Bar.
  • Weather: Millibars \leftrightarrow Inches of Mercury.
  • Science: Pascals \leftrightarrow Atmospheres.

The Formula

Pressure is Force divided by Area. P=F/AP = F / A

  • PSI: Pounds per Square Inch.
  • Bar: 100,000 Pascals (approx 1 Atmosphere).

Unlike math class, here's what that means

Imagine a 1-pound weight sitting on a 1-inch square of your skin. That is 1 PSI. Now imagine the entire weight of the Earth's atmosphere pushing down on you. At sea level, that's 14.7 PSI. You don't feel it because you're used to it, but it's there!

Example Calculation

Your car manual says "2.2 Bar" but the gas station pump is in PSI.

  1. Ratio: 1 Bar \approx 14.5038 PSI.
  2. Math: 2.2×14.5038=31.92.2 \times 14.5038 = 31.9.
  3. Result: Pump them to 32 PSI.

Did You Know? 💡

  • Space is Empty: In space, the pressure is 0 PSI (a vacuum). If you took your helmet off, the air inside your lungs would expand explosively. (Don't do that).
  • The Ocean is Heavy: For every 33 feet (10m) you go underwater, the pressure increases by 1 Atmosphere (14.7 PSI). At the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the pressure is over 8 tons per square inch. That's like an elephant standing on your thumb.
  • Boiling Point: Lower pressure lowers the boiling point of water. On top of Mt. Everest, water boils at 71°C (160°F), so you can't make a decent cup of tea.

Expert Insight

Absolute vs. Gauge Pressure:

  • PSIG (Gauge): What your tire gauge reads. It ignores atmospheric pressure. If it says "0", it means "same as outside air."
  • PSIA (Absolute): Includes atmospheric pressure. 0 PSIG = 14.7 PSIA.
  • Tip: Unless you are a scientist, you almost always want "Gauge" pressure.

Why this matters

Safety: Over-inflating tires leads to blowouts. Under-inflating kills fuel economy. Weather: A dropping barometer ("Low Pressure") means a storm is coming. Rising pressure means clear skies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pascal? The Pascal (Pa) is the scientific unit. It's very small (1 Newton per square meter). That's roughly the weight of a dollar bill flat on a table. That's why we usually measure in Kilopascals (kPa).

1 Bar or 1 Atm? They are almost the same.

  • 1 Atm = 1.01325 Bar.
  • For rough math, you can treat them as equal.

What is "Torr"? It's named after Evangelista Torricelli. 760 Torr = 1 Atm. It's basically "millimeters of mercury" (mmHg), used often in medicine for blood pressure (e.g., 120/80 mmHg).
