World Clock
Stop Googling "what time is it in Tokyo" every time you want to text your friend abroad. Our world clock gives you a precise, real-time look at every time zone on Earth, so you never accidentally wake up your grandma in London at 3 AM.
What this calculator does
- Track Multiple Cities: See London, New York, and Sydney times side-by-side.
- Visual Day/Night Codes: Know instantly if it's office hours or sleeping hours.
- DST Aware: Automatically handles Daylight Saving Time switches so you don't have to.
- Time Difference: Shows exactly how many hours ahead or behind a city is from you.
The Formula
Unlike math class, here's what that means
The Earth rotates 360 degrees every 24 hours. That means every hour, the sun moves across 15 degrees of longitude. We slice the world into 24 "zones" starting from Greenwich, England (UTC+0). If you are 5 slices west (New York), you are UTC-5. If you are 9 slices east (Tokyo), you are UTC+9.
Example Calculation
It is 12:00 PM (Noon) in London (UTC+0).
- New York (UTC-5):
- Tokyo (UTC+9):
- Sydney (UTC+11):
Did You Know? 💡
- One Zone China: Geographically, China is huge (it spans 5 time zones!), but politically, the entire country runs on Beijing Time. That means in western China, the sun doesn't rise until 10 AM in winter!
- France Wins: Which country has the most time zones? It's France, with 12! (Thanks to overseas territories like Tahiti and French Guiana). The USA works with 11.
- Half-Hour Zones: Not everyone uses hour offsets. India is UTC+5:30. Nepal is even weirder at UTC+5:45.
Expert Insight
The International Date Line: This is where time travel (sort of) exists. The IDL sits in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
- Cross it going West (US to Japan) You skip a whole day (Sunday becomes Monday).
- Cross it going East (Japan to US) You repeat a day (Monday becomes Sunday). You can literally land before you took off!
Why this matters
In a remote-first world, "Time Zone Etiquette" is a real skill. Knowing that 2 PM in New York is 8 PM in Berlin (dinner time) prevents you from being the annoying coworker who schedules late meetings.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is UTC vs GMT? For practical purposes, they are the same thing (Time in London). Technically, GMT is a time zone (based on the sun), and UTC is a time standard (based on atomic clocks). Use UTC for technical precision.
Why does my phone show a different time? Your phone syncs with cell towers. Our clock syncs with internet time servers (NTP). If they differ by a few seconds, trust the internet server.
Does this handle Daylight Saving? Yes. "Spring Forward" and "Fall Back" are annoying, but our system updates automatically. Note that some places (like Arizona and most of Asia) don't use DST at all!
Can I see future times? This tool shows current time. To calculate future meetings (e.g., "What time will it be in Paris when it's 3 PM here next Tuesday?"), use our Time Calculator.
