GPA Calculator

Doing the math to see if you can still get into med school—or just trying to stay off academic probation? Our GPA calculator handles the weighted, unweighted, and honors class chaos so you don't have to.

What this calculator does

  • Cumulative GPA: Your entire academic career in one number.
  • Semester GPA: How much damage (or glory) you did this term.
  • Scenario Planning: "If I get a C in Chem, what happens?"

The Formula

GPA is a weighted average. GPA=(Grade Value×Credits)Total Credits\text{GPA} = \frac{\sum (\text{Grade Value} \times \text{Credits})}{\sum \text{Total Credits}}

  • A = 4.0
  • B = 3.0
  • C = 2.0
  • (Add +0.5 or +1.0 for Honors/AP weights).

Unlike math class, here's what that means

Credits are multipliers.

  • Getting an A in a 4-credit Physics class (16 points).
  • Getting an A in a 1-credit Gym class (4 points). The Physics class counts 4x more. Don't slack on the heavy classes!

Example Calculation

  • Math (3 credits): B (3.0) -> 3×3=93 \times 3 = 9 points.
  • English (3 credits): A (4.0) -> 3×4=123 \times 4 = 12 points.
  • Total Points: 21.
  • Total Credits: 6.
  • GPA: 21/6=3.521 / 6 = \mathbf{3.5}.

Did You Know? 💡

  • Grade Inflation: In the 1960s, the most common grade in US colleges was a C. Today, the most common grade is an A. (43% of all grades given).
  • The "Gentleman's C": Back in the day, rich kids at Ivy League schools would aim for a "C" just to pass without trying. Today, a C will get your application tossed in the bin.
  • 5.0 GPA?: Because of weighted AP/IB classes, some valedictorians graduate with GPAs higher than 4.0. It's technically "extra credit" on steroids.

Expert Insight

Weighted vs. Unweighted:

  • Unweighted: Max is 4.0. Treats AP Calculus the same as Basket Weaving.
  • Weighted: Gives bonus points for difficulty (Usually +1.0 for AP).
  • College Admissions: Most top colleges re-calculate your GPA using their own formula anyway, stripping out non-academic classes like PE.

Why this matters

Scholarships often have hard cutoffs (e.g., "Must maintain 3.0"). Dropping to a 2.99 can cost you thousands of dollars. Using a calculator lets you see exactly how much wiggle room you have before finals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 'W' count? Usually, a Withdrawal (W) does not affect your GPA. It just shows up on the transcript as "I quit." An F counts as a 0.0 and destroys your average.

How do I fix a bad GPA? Retake the class. Many colleges calculate "Grade Replacement," where the new grade wipes out the old F. Calculating the new average is the fastest way to see hope.

What is a "Magna Cum Laude" GPA? It varies by school, but typically:

  • Cum Laude: Top 20-30% (approx 3.5+)
  • Magna Cum Laude: Top 10-15% (approx 3.7+)
  • Summa Cum Laude: Top 1-5% (approx 3.9+)
