About Net Run Rate (NRR)

Net Run Rate is a statistical method used in cricket to rank teams with equal points in tournaments. It's calculated by subtracting the average runs per over conceded from the average runs per over scored.

Formula

NRR = (Total Runs Scored / Total Overs Faced) - (Total Runs Conceded / Total Overs Bowled)

Key Points

  • A positive NRR indicates a team scores faster than it concedes
  • A negative NRR indicates a team concedes faster than it scores
  • Used in World Cups, IPL, and other league tournaments
  • A difference of 0.1 can be significant in close tournaments

Example

If Team A scores 250 runs in 50 overs (5.0 runs/over) and concedes 200 runs in 50 overs (4.0 runs/over), their NRR is +1.0 (5.0 - 4.0), which is excellent.

Tournament Impact

In the 2019 Cricket World Cup, NRR decided playoff positions when teams had equal points. Teams strategize not just to win, but to win by large margins to improve their NRR.
