Batting Average Calculator

Whether you're tracking your Little League stats, analyzing MLB MVP races, or obsessing over Cricket World Cup figures, this calculator handles the math so you can focus on the game.

What this calculator does

  • Baseball Stats: Hits / At Bats.
  • Cricket Stats: Runs / Outs.
  • Performance Check: Are you "Elite" or "Benchwarmer"?

The Formula

Baseball: AVG=HitsAt Bats\text{AVG} = \frac{\text{Hits}}{\text{At Bats}}

  • Note: Walks (BB) do not count as At Bats.

Cricket: AVG=Total RunsTimes Out\text{AVG} = \frac{\text{Total Runs}}{\text{Times Out}}

  • Note: If you are "Not Out" (NO), your average goes up because the denominator stays small.

Unlike math class, here's what that means

  • Baseball: A .300 average means you fail 70% of the time, and you're still a Hall of Famer.
  • Cricket: An average of 50 means you're a legend. An average of 99.94 means you're Don Bradman.

Example Calculation

Baseball Scenario:

  • Hits: 45.
  • At Bats: 150.
  • AVG: 45/150=.30045 / 150 = .300. (Excellent).

Cricket Scenario:

  • Runs: 500.
  • Outs: 10.
  • AVG: 500/10=50.0500 / 10 = 50.0. (World Class).

Did You Know? 💡

  • Ted Williams: The last MLB player to hit over .400 in a season (.406 in 1941). It hasn't happened in 80+ years significantly because pitchers got better (and faster).
  • The Mendoza Line: Named after Mario Mendoza, a .200 average is considered the absolute minimum to stay in the major leagues.
  • Bradman's Duck: Sir Donald Bradman needed just 4 runs in his final innings to retire with an average of 100. He got out for 0 (a duck). His average stuck at 99.94.

Expert Insight

Sabermetrics vs. Traditional: Old school scouts loved Batting Average. New school "Moneyball" GMs prefer OPS (On-base Plus Slugging) because it accounts for walks and power. A single is not the same value as a Home Run, but Batting Average treats them equally.

Why this matters

Stats don't lie. They tell you if a player is actually contributing or just getting lucky. Whether for fantasy leagues or contract negotiations, the Average is the first number everyone looks at.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Sacrifice Fly lower my average? In Baseball: No. A Sac Fly counts as an RBI but not an At Bat. In Cricket: No, you aren't out, but you didn't score. It doesn't affect calculations unless you get out.

What is a "Good" High School average? Usually .400+. High school pitching is slower, so hitting standards are higher.

Why is Cricket average so much higher? Because in Cricket, you can score 100 runs in a single turn. In Baseball, the max you can do is 4 bases (1 run) per turn.
