BMI Calculator

Is your weight in the "healthy zone"? The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening tool to see where you stand. It's not perfect, but it's a start.

What this calculator does

  • Score: Calculates your specific BMI number.
  • Category: Underweight, Normal, Overweight, or Obese.
  • Screening: Flags potential health risks associated with your size.

The Formula

It's a simple ratio of weight to height. BMI=Weight (kg)Height (m)2\text{BMI} = \frac{\text{Weight (kg)}}{\text{Height (m)}^2}

  • Imperial: 703×(lbs/inches2)703 \times (\text{lbs} / \text{inches}^2).

Unlike math class, here's what that means

  • 18.5 - 24.9: The "Green Zone" (Normal).
  • 25 - 29.9: The "Yellow Zone" (Overweight).
  • 30+: The "Red Zone" (Obese).

Example Calculation

Height: 5'9" (69 inches). Weight: 160 lbs.

  1. Height Sq: 69×69=476169 \times 69 = 4761.
  2. Ratio: 160/4761=0.0336160 / 4761 = 0.0336.
  3. Factor: 0.0336×703=23.60.0336 \times 703 = 23.6.
  4. Result: 23.6 (Normal).

Did You Know? 💡

  • The Arnold Anomaly: In his prime, Arnold Schwarzenegger had a BMI of 31 ("Obese"). Because muscle is dense, bodybuilders often fail the BMI test.
  • Morning Height: You are taller in the morning because gravity hasn't compressed your spine yet. A 1cm difference can slightly shift your BMI.
  • Origin: BMI was invented by a mathematician (Adolphe Quetelet) in the 1830s for population stats, not individual health.

Expert Insight

Waist Circumference: BMI misses "skinny fat." A better check is your waist. If your waist measurement is less than half your height, you generally have lower health risks, regardless of BMI.

Why this matters

High BMI correlates with heart disease, diabetes, and joint pain. It's the "Check Engine" light of your body. It doesn't tell you exactly what's wrong, but it tells you to look under the hood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI accurate for athletes? No. It assumes you are "average" composition. If you can bench press a truck, ignore your BMI.

Does age matter? Yes. Older adults (65+) actually benefit from a slightly higher BMI (25-27) to protect against frailty.

Can I target fat loss? No. You cannot "spot reduce" belly fat. You lose fat systemically (from everywhere at once) through a calorie deficit.
