Inflation Calculator
"Back in my day, a movie ticket was a nickel." Okay grandpa, let's check the math. Our Inflation Calculator shows how prices change over time due to the devaluation of currency.
What this calculator does
- Past to Present: What was $100 in 1980 worth today?
- Future Value: How much will a gallon of milk cost in 2050?
- Purchasing Power: Why your savings account is losing money.
The Formula
We use CPI (Consumer Price Index) data.
Unlike math class, here's what that means
Inflation is the silent tax.
- Average Rate: ~3% per year.
- Rule of 72: At 3%, prices double every 24 years.
- Your Raise: If you didn't get a 3% raise this year, you technically took a pay cut.
Example Calculation
Item: Car. Price in 2000: $20,000. Year: 2024. Inflation: ~80% cumulative. Price Today: $36,000. (Seems accurate).
Did You Know? 💡
- Hyperinflation: In Zimbabwe (2008), prices doubled every 24 hours. They printed 100 Trillion Dollar bills that were worth about 40 cents.
- The Big Mac Index: Economists compare the price of a Big Mac across countries to measure currency value. It's surprisingly accurate.
- Shrinkflation: Companies keep the price the same but make the bag of chips smaller. Sneaky.
Expert Insight
Assets vs Cash: Hard assets (Real Estate, Gold, Stocks) generally rise with inflation. Cash loses value. This is why rich people own things and poor people save cash.
Why this matters
If you are saving for a goal 20 years away, you need to account for inflation. $1 Million sounds like a lot, but in 30 years, it might only buy what $400k buys today.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is deflation good? No. If prices drop, people stop spending (waiting for lower prices), companies fire workers, and the economy crashes (The Great Depression). The Fed targets 2% inflation as the "sweet spot."
How is CPI calculated? Top economists track a "basket of goods" (milk, gas, rent, clothes) and see how the total price changes month to month.
