Discount Calculator

Black Friday deals, clearance racks, or "30% off" coupons? Don't let the red stickers fool you. Calculate the final price (and the tax) instantly.

What this calculator does

  • Final Price: What you actually pay.
  • Amount Saved: How much you kept in your pocket.
  • Tax Inclusion: Don't forget Uncle Sam's cut.

The Formula

Current Price=Original×(1Discount)\text{Current Price} = \text{Original} \times (1 - \text{Discount}) Tax=Price×Tax Rate\text{Tax} = \text{Price} \times \text{Tax Rate}

Unlike math class, here's what that means

  • 50% Off: Half price.
  • 75% Off: Quarter price.
  • Buy One Get One Free: Effectively 50% off (if they are same price).

Example Calculation

Jeans: $80. Sale: 30% Off. Tax: 8%.

  1. Discount: 80×0.30=80 \times 0.30 = 24$.
  2. Sale Price: 8024=80 - 24 = 56$.
  3. Tax: 56×0.08=56 \times 0.08 = 4.48$.
  4. Total: $60.48.

Did You Know? 💡

  • The "Double Discount" Trap: Taking "Extra 20% off" usually applies to the sale price, not the original.
    • 10050% Off=100 \rightarrow 50\% \text{ Off} = 50$.
    • Extra 20% Off \50 = 40\. (Total discount is 60%, not 70%).
  • Anchor Pricing: Stores mark items up just to mark them down. "Was $100, Now $50" sells better than "Price $50," even if the value is identical.

Expert Insight

Stacked Coupons: Always apply dollar-off coupons before percent-off coupons if possible? Actually, no.

  • Math check: (10010)×0.8=72(100 - 10) \times 0.8 = 72.
  • (100×0.8)10=70(100 \times 0.8) - 10 = 70. Apply % first, then $ off for the best deal.

Why this matters

Retail therapy is fun until the credit card bill arrives. Knowing the real price stops impulse buys.
