Speed Converter

MPH, KPH, Knots, or Mach? Whether you're driving in Europe, sailing a boat, or breaking the sound barrier, our Speed Converter keeps you moving at the right pace.

What this calculator does

  • Road: Miles per Hour (mph) \leftrightarrow Kilometers per Hour (km/h).
  • Sea/Air: Knots (nautical miles per hour).
  • Science: Meters per Second (m/s) or Mach number.

The Formula

Speed is Distance over Time. v=dtv = \frac{d}{t}

  • 1 mph \approx 1.609 km/h.
  • 1 Knot \approx 1.15 mph.
  • Mach 1 \approx 767 mph (Speed of Sound).

Unlike math class, here's what that means

  • 60 mph: A mile a minute.
  • 100 km/h: Highway speed in most of the world (~62 mph).
  • Mach 3: You are a fighter jet (or the SR-71 Blackbird).

Example Calculation

You are driving in Canada and the sign says 100 km/h. Your US car reads mph.

  1. Ratio: 1 km/h \approx 0.62 mph.
  2. Math: 100×0.62=62100 \times 0.62 = 62.
  3. Result: Drive 62 mph. (Don't speed!).

Did You Know? 💡

  • The Knot: Sailors used to measure speed by throwing a log tied to a rope with knots over the side of the boat. They counted how many knots unspooled in 30 seconds.
  • Orbital Speed: The ISS travels at 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h). It circles Earth every 90 minutes.
  • Usain Bolt: Top speed of 27.8 mph (44.72 km/h). He would get a ticket in a school zone.

Expert Insight

Mach Numbers: The speed of sound changes with temperature/altitude.

  • Sea Level: ~761 mph.
  • 30,000 ft: ~678 mph. Mach isn't a fixed speed; it's a ratio relative to the local speed of sound.

Why this matters

Driving in a foreign country? Mixing up 50 mph and 50 km/h gets you honked at (too slow) or pulled over (too fast). In aviation, mixing up Knots and KPH can be fatal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the speed of light? 299,792,458 m/s. (Or ~670 Million mph). Nothing is faster.

Is a Knot faster than a Mile per Hour? Yes. 1 Knot = 1.15 mph. A cruise ship doing 20 knots is moving at 23 mph.

How fast is a sneeze? Approx 100 mph (160 km/h).
