Watts, Horsepower, Kilowatts? Whether you're tuning a car engine, building a PC, or just trying to understand your electric bill, our Power Converter handles the heavy lifting.

What this calculator does

  • Engines: Convert mechanical Horsepower (hp) to Kilowatts (kW).
  • Electronics: Watts (W) to Milliwatts (mW) or Kilowatts.
  • Understanding Output: Figure out exactly how strong that motor really is.

The Formula

Power is the rate of doing work. P=WtP = \frac{W}{t}

  • 1 Horsepower (hp) \approx 745.7 Watts.
  • 1 Kilowatt (kW) = 1,000 Watts.

Unlike math class, here's what that means

  • 746 Watts: A standard horse pulling a load.
  • 100 Watts: A bright lightbulb.
  • 100 Horsepower: A Honda Civic.
  • 1000 Horsepower: A Bugatti Veyron (or 746 kW).

Example Calculation

You have a car with 300 Horsepower. How many Kilowatts is that?

  1. Ratio: 1 hp \approx 0.7457 kW.
  2. Math: 300×0.7457=223.71300 \times 0.7457 = 223.71.
  3. Result: The engine produces 224 kW.

Did You Know? 💡

  • Steam Power: James Watt invented the term "Horsepower" to sell his steam engines. He literally compared his machine to how many horses it could replace in a mine.
  • Human Power: An elite cyclist (like in the Tour de France) can sustain about 400 Watts (0.5 hp) for an hour. A sprinter can hit 1,500 Watts (2 hp) for a few seconds.
  • The Sun: The sun radiates 3.8×10263.8 \times 10^{26} Watts. That's a lot of lightbulbs.

Expert Insight

HP vs BHP:

  • HP (Horsepower): Theoretical power.
  • BHP (Brake Horsepower): Actual power available at the wheels after friction loss (transmission, gears, etc.). BHP is usually 15-20% lower than HP.

Why this matters

Buying an AC unit? You need BTUs or Watts. buying a car? You check HP. Buying a generator? You check kW. Knowing how to switch between them ensures you don't blow a fuse or buy a weak engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Metric Horsepower (PS)? Used in Germany/Japan. 1 PS \approx 0.986 hp. It's slightly smaller than US horsepower.

How many Watts does a PC need? A mid-range gaming PC uses about 400-600 Watts. A high-end rig with an RTX 4090 might need 1000W+.

Is Torque the same as Power? No. Torque is pushing force. Power is how fast you can use that force. (Torque hits the wall; Power goes through it).
