Jet-setting to Tokyo, shopping online in Euros, or just trying to figure out if that "cheap" vacation is actually cheap? Our currency converter gives you the real-time purchasing power of your money around the globe.

What this calculator does

  • Provides Live Exchange Rates (updated every 60 seconds)
  • Converts between 150+ world currencies (and crypto!)
  • Shows you the "Real" price of international items
  • Helps you spot bad exchange rates at airports

The Formula

Amount in Target Currency=Amount in Base×Exchange Rate\text{Amount in Target Currency} = \text{Amount in Base} \times \text{Exchange Rate}

Unlike math class, here's what that means

Using a currency converter is like using a translator for money. If the language is "USD" and you want to speak "EUR," the exchange rate is the dictionary that tells you 1 dollar equals roughly 0.92 euros.

Example Calculation

You have $500 USD and are traveling to Europe (EUR). The rate is 0.90.

  1. Math: 500×0.90=450500 \times 0.90 = 450
  2. Result: You have €450 to spend on croissants and pasta.

Did You Know? 💡

  • The Big Mac Index: Economists literally compare the price of a Big Mac McDonald's burger in different countries to see if a currency is "overvalued." It's surprisingly accurate!
  • Airport Scams: Currency exchange kiosks at airports are notorious for charging 10-15% markups. You lose $10-$15 for every $100 you swap. It's almost always cheaper to use an ATM in the city.
  • Zimbabwe's Trillion: In 2009, hyperinflation in Zimbabwe was so bad they printed a 100 Trillion Dollar banknote... which was barely enough to buy a loaf of bread.

Expert Insight

Always Pay in Local Currency: When you use your card abroad, the terminal might ask: "Pay in USD or EUR?" ALWAYS choose the local currency (EUR). If you choose USD, the merchant sets the exchange rate (usually a terrible one). If you choose local, your bank sets the rate (usually a fair one). This is called the "Dynamic Currency Conversion" trap.

Why this matters

Exchange rates move every second. A 5% shift might not sound like much, but on a $2,000 vacation, that's $100—an entire nice dinner lost to math. Checking the rate before you buy gives you the power to know the true cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do rates change? Constantly. During market hours (Mon-Fri), they change every millisecond. Our tool updates regularly to give you the most current "mid-market" rate.

What is the "Mid-Market" rate? It's the midpoint between the "Buy" and "Sell" price of a currency. It's the "true" value. Banks won't give you this rate; they add a "spread" (fee) to make a profit.

Is it better to exchange cash or use a card? Generally, credit cards (especially travel cards with no foreign transaction fees) give you the best rates, closest to the mid-market. Cash exchanges almost always have higher fees.

Why is the British Pound worth more than the Dollar? Higher value doesn't mean a "stronger" economy. It's just historical math. What matters is purchasing power—how much that money actually buys in the country.

Can I convert crypto here? Yes! We support major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) so you can see how much your digital wallet is worth in real cash.
